Why I won’t be shopping at Wally World (Wal-Mart) this holiday season (rant, long)
Now those of you that know me well, know that I normally don’t use my blog to rant, only to rave. However, this situation has made me so po’ed that I had to post it to my blog to get it off of my chest. So here goes.
I have been a faithful Wal-Mart shopper for a long time. I used to like shopping at Wal-Mart because my dollar could go further there. I even bought a little bit of Wal-Mart stock via Sharebuilder. Recent events have changed my mind about Wal-Mart.
Around last year this time, I married my husband Bobby. When I met him he was divorced with three kids. He got injured while working for Wal-Mart. He was unloading a truck (which wasn’t the job he was trained to do) that was loaded incorrectly and the stuff that he was unloading fell on both of his arms and subsequently broke both of his wrists. He also was born with over 300 allergies (most of them are to medications), so treatment is pretty tough. To make matters worse, the manager that was on duty at the time filled out the form that they use to report injuries on incorrectly. The manager put down that only his left arm was injured when in actuality both of his arms were injured. So they paid him for his left arm, but not his right arm. He developed carpel tunnel in his left wrist since he had to overcompensate to make up for the loss of the use in his right hand. About the middle of last year, they cut off his worker’s compensation checks. This court case has been dragging on for like two or three years.
So now all of our income comes from one person, me. I do have two part time jobs and I’m running my own business, but the thing that is making me the angriest is the fact that my husband gets so depressed sometimes because he can’t do the things that he used to do before his injuries. The other reason I won’t be able to shop at Wal-Mart is the time factor. Between working at my other jobs, running my business, taking care of a sick husband and juggling being a step-mom, I barely have time to sleep and eat, let alone shop.
The other reason I’m not shopping at Wal-Mart is because they did the same thing to my brother-in-law. Like I said, I’m not advocating a boycott or anything, I’ve just got to get this off of my chest so I can go back to being my happy, positive self! Thanks for listening!

First, you’re allowed a rant; it’s your blog, and that’s sort of what they’re for.
Walmart is known for this type of thing. There was another big case earlier this year that ended up getting national attention, and Walmart backed out of it. So, you’re not alone.
I will say this, though. In defense of Walmart, and someone knows they need some, they hire so many people and probably don’t train all of them to peak efficiency (I’m being nice here), and like I usually tell people, it’s always their responsibility to make sure someone else isn’t messing up something that ultimately will impact them. I don’t necessarily have trust factors, but I do believe in verifying things for myself.
Good luck to your husband. Getting depressed about things isn’t the way to go, though I certainly understand it. I’m sure you’ll be able to help him find another way to do something that he’s physically capable of. And continue to rant away.
I haven’t shopped at Walmart in years. I disagree with some of their hiring practices re: assigning too few hours to pay employee benefits.
BTW, I’m fuzzyredrobe on Twitter.
